The Arthur L. Hinckley Jr. Papers consist primarily of account books, correspondence, receipts, and other records concerning Orramel Hinckley's river steamboat "Irene" and her frequent trips between Washington, La., and New Orleans between September 1865 and July 1866. The papers also include individual account books and correspondence for women in the Hinckley, Gardner, Tesson, and Beers families between 1858 and 1909. Reel PP8.1 contains a passage register (1865-66), two cabin registers (1865-66), five freight books (1865-66, 1881-82), three cash books (1865-66), two ledgers (1865-66), two portage books (1865-66), two books of wood receipts (1865-66), and a trip account book (1857). All of these books concern Orramel Hinckley's steamboat "Irene" except one freight book re the "J.M. Sharpe" (1866), one freight book re the "Sonora" (1866), one freight book re the "Eleanor" (1881-82), and the trip account book re the "Anna Perrett" (1857). Reel PP8.2 begins with a trip account book for trip no. 4 of the steamboat "Irene" (July 24, 1866); 11 individual account books for Delia Gardner, Cornelia Gardner, Melvina Tesson, and a Miss Michon (1854-60); letters from A.N. Hawley, a fruit cultivator and vintner in Hawleyville, Conn., to his cousin, Cornelia Beers, in Washington, La. (1884); letters from Arthur Latham to Orramel Strong Hinckley and Alice Cornelia Hinckley (1876-85); notices for funerals in Washington, La., and other memorabilia (1862-1916); miscellaneous unidentified photographs; correspondence between Orramel Hinckley in New Albany, Ind., and John H. Gordon (1837-55); and correspondence between Alice Cornelia Hinckley and members of the Mack family of Londonderry, N.H. (1879-1909). The remainder of reel PP8.2 and all of reel PP8.3 consist of packets of receipts, memoranda, clearance papers, and other records for products purchased in New Orleans by Orramel Hinckley to transport back to Washington, La., aboard the "Irene" between September 1865 and July 1866. Reel PP8.2 continues with nine packets grouped by topic, such as oysters, soap, ice, dairy, etc. They are followed by packets for trips no. 1-9 (Sept. 14-Dec. 20, 1865). Reel PP8.3 contains packets for trips no. 10-35 (Jan. 3-June 27, 1866) and trips no. 1-4 (July 4-25, 1866).

Orramel Hinckley was a steamboat owner and captain whose business was centered principally in New Orleans and Opelousas, Louisiana. His wife, Anna Hawley Gardner (1824-1886), and son, Orramel Strong Hinckley (1840-1885), lived in Washington, Saint Landry Parish. The Hinckleys were related to the families of Asa Norton and Thomas Gardner, tanners and dealers in hides and deer skins in Saint Landry Parish.
